Dressing for this Awkward Time in the Weather Cycle

ellahols

This week, I was caught with long socks and Uggs on in 75 degree weather. The horror. I sat back in my chair at Coupa positioned directly in the sun and rethought my fashion choices in the morning. Picture this: I wake up bleary-eyed at 9am for my 9:30, and all I can think about is a) getting a sesame bagel at CoHo and b) how insanely cold I was. These repetitive thoughts were not conducive to my forward-thinking and planning with regard to the fluctuating weather patterns of the day. So, I put on my long white socks, Ugg slippers, heavy jeans, and my boyfriend’s waffle-weave long-sleeve shirt to set out to CoHo in the 50 degree weather of the morning. Once I left my 9:30, however, the temperature had jumped more than 10 degrees, and I was sweating under my long-sleeve shirt. When I found myself sweltering at Coupa with no skin showing, I knew changes must be made, and I thought I would take you all on this journey with me.

As an almost-native Californian, this problem is not foreign to me. California’s year-round temperate weather makes fashion choices difficult when taking your body temperature into account. For example, even in the summer, you have to bring a jacket to wear when the sun goes down (or just retreat inside when the sunset is over). However, I have not yet found an all-encompassing answer to this commonplace dilemma. Here are a few solutions and their respective benefits and drawbacks.

Wearing a sweatsuit with a warm-weather outfit underneath

Now, I have to say that I have never tested this solution out, but the benefits seem bountiful. You are appropriately weather-adjusted throughout the day according to your specific needs. For instance, if your legs get warm, just take off the sweatpants to wear your sweatshirt with jean shorts (a totally appropriate fashion choice if you ask me). Or, if your torso runs hot, do the converse and wear your tank top and sweatpants with pride. However, one big consideration of this solution is the storage of this bulky sweatsuit. It is definitely be difficult to stuff a sweatshirt in my backpack, let alone a whole sweatsuit. Sadly enough, this might be a dealbreaker for me. Jury is still out though, I’ll report back.

Wearing lighter fabrics

This solution has been tried, tested, and approved by yours truly. While lighter fabrics don’t protect my skin from the harsh wind of my morning bike ride as well as heavier fabrics do, I believe this drawback is a sacrifice I am willing to make. This morning, I went with cotton leggings and a lighter sweater to emulate this solution, and I must say it worked great. Cotton, linen, and even some variations of denim are perfect for this solution and are probably sitting in your closet waiting to be worn. This has my seal of approval.

Changing midday

Where is the innovation and creativity? Yes, this is probably the most common solution to the problem, but I am advocating against this lazy angle to problem-solving. This solution means less free time and MORE LAUNDRY, which are two consequences I am not willing to put myself through anymore.

I think the best solution is clear, but I’ll let you all make your own decisions.

Until next week xx.

Fashionably,

Ella
